A “Child’s Play” Reboot is Coming and Yes the Killer Doll is Named Chucky

There hasn’t been a shortage of Child’s Play movies for a while. Since it’s original release in 1988 the killer doll has starred in seven movies total and the most recent one came out last year. But for the first time, Child’s Play is joining the slasher film ranks and is getting a remake.

New Brand, Same Name, Same Horror

A few changes have already been made with the little information given, including a change for the doll’s brand.

The Chucky doll is originally a toy called a “Good Guy” doll. In the 2019 remake, the toy’s name seems to be switched to a “Buddy” doll according to a promotional image on the movie’s Twitter.

The name may have some connection the 1980s boy doll from the 80s called “My Buddy”. This doll was rumored to be the inspiration behind Chucky’s original design. And with the name change, it seems the inspiration is going further than before.

Of course, with this change fans fear the iconic redhead would lose his name as well, but those fears can be put to rest. Chucky’s name is here to stay according to bloody-disgusting.com.

Missing Pieces and New Faces

However, the original voice actor for Chucky in all past movies, Brad Dourif, will not return for this remake.

Also not returning to the project is the creator of the Chucky character Don Mancini and his producer partner David Kirschner. Mancini has had a hand in all past Chucky movies, but both he and his partner declined roles as executive producers on the project. According to Entertainment Weekly, the new film would “muddy” the franchise.

Joining the project is Seth Grahame-Smith, a producer on It, along with his producing partner David Katzenberg. Aubrey Plaza and Gabriel Bateman will be taking on the roles of mother and son.

The movie will come from the MGM/Orion Pictures company. The writer for the project is Tyler Burton Smith and directer Norwegian filmmaker Lars Klevberg.

As for who will take over the iconic role of Chucky, we’ll have to wait and see.

The Child’s Play remake hits theaters June 21, 2019.
