El Paisano

About Us

One of the highlights of the Communications/Languages Division is the Mass Media and Journalism program that features its award winning newspaper and magazine and now sports a full digital newspaper and magazine that are online and updated daily.

Included in the online paper are videos, slide shows and the return of the college’s radio program under the call letters of KRHC.

El Paisano, the college’s newspaper, and La Cima, the student magazine, have had a long and storied history on the Rio Hondo campus and have been in production for nearly 50 years, almost as long as the college has been in business.

El Paisano began publication in September of 1964 with Ted Snyder as its first adviser and La Cima began publication around 1966 with Snyder at the helm. John Francis, the current adviser to both publications, was a student staff member of both publications during the first two years.

Francis said that the advent of the digital newspaper and magazine has brought out new elements that that make up journalism in the 21st century. Both publications not only feature student writings, but also student broadcasts and videos, as well as photo slide shows that highlight Rio Hondo events throughout the entire school year.

The college journalism program has trained many student journalists in the past and many of its students have gone on to have long and successful careers in the fields of journalism, public relations, graphic design and broadcasting.

El Paisano is published bi-weekly on the campus and La Cima is produced once a year by students learning the craft of journalism.

The Media/Journalism department has over 150 students participating in its program each semester.
