“House of Cards” actor Reg E. Cathey Passes Away at 59

Reg E. Cathey, better known for his roles in HBO’s “The Wire” and Netflix’s “House of Cards,” passed away Friday night in his home in New York. TMZ reports he was surrounded by family and friends at the time of his passing. He had been battling lung cancer, but the cause of death has yet to be confirmed.

Cathey’s death was announced by “The Wire” creator, David Simon on Twitter as he paid tribute to the late actor. Cathey played politician Norman Wilson in seasons four and five of the HBO hit series.

Not only a fine, masterful actor — but simply one of the most delightful human beings with whom I ever shared some long days on set,” Simon tweeted of Cathey, “On wit alone, he could double any man over and leave him thinking. Reg, your memory is a great blessing.

Cathey won an Outstanding Guess Actor Emmy award in 2005 for his role of restaurant owner Freddy Hayes in “House of Cards.” The creator of the drama series also tweeted about the actor’s passing.

Reg Cathey was one of a kind. Brimming with life force, generosity, humor, gravitas and a fountain of talent,” Beau Willimon, creator of “House of Cards” tweeted, “Loved by everyone lucky enough [to] know him and work with him. He will be greatly missed. Rest In Peace, Reg.”

Cathey’s most recent notable movie appearance was in 2015’s “Fantastic Four.” He stars as heroes Susan (Kate Mara) and Johhny’s (Michael B. Jordan) father, Dr. Franklin Storm.

The late actor is still set to appear in season 2 of Netflix and Marvel’s “Luke Cage” series. He recorded all his scenes before passing and will play Cage’s father. How large Cathey’s role will be is unknown.

Born into a military family in Huntsville, Alabama, the Emmy award-winning Cathey spent most of his early childhood in Germany. Cathey’s IMDb profile states he fell in love with theater when viewing the show “Guys and Dolls” on stage in the German country.

Cathey would have been 60 in August.
