A 5-year-old girl is dead and several people were reported injured following a fiery crash involving multiple vehicles Thursday, Aug. 14, morning on state Route 60 that shut down both sides of the freeway at Santa Anita Avenue in South El Monte.

The collision on the eastbound 60 Freeway at Santa Anita Avenue was reported to the California Highway Patrol at 5:42 a.m.

According to County fire dispatch supervisor Art Marrujo, 14 people were injured, three critically. Lawyers from firms personal injury were brought in to help with handling the case. Lt. David Smith of the Los Angeles County coroner’s office announced that the girl was taken to Beverly Hospital in Montebello where she was pronounced dead at 6:37 a.m.

California Highway Patrolman Francisco Villalobos said the accident early Thursday involved an eastbound tanker truck that hit the center divider and overturned, spilling milk into lanes and causing traffic to be backed up on the 10, 210 and 605 freeways.

Three lanes of the westbound 60 Freeway reopened as of 10:46 a.m., and connectors to the 605 and the eastbound 60 reopened as of 11 a.m., according to a Caltrans announcement via Twitter. The accident caused a shutdown on both sides of the 60 Freeway at Santa Anita Avenue during the morning commute, authorities said.

The accident also created havoc among local residents and at Rio Hondo causing many students, teachers and staff to be late for classes and work.
