Discover Rio Day Invites Young Students to Campus

The second annual Discover Rio Day took place Nov.17  on campus and brought in elementary and middle school children from neighboring cities to get the young students involved early in college and explore campus life at Rio Hondo.

Rio Hondo invited nine middle schools and one elementary school from Whittier, Pico Rivera, El Monte and South El Monte to spark young students’ interests in college and potential careers.

Scott Elementary School and various middle schools like Graves, Hillview, Dexter, Los Nietos, the STEAM Academy at Burke, North Park, Kranz, Columbia and Shively all took part in exploring the campus, taking a tour with representatives from the Associated Students of Rio Hondo College (ASRHC.)

Students met at the Wray Theater for introductions and explored what Rio Hondo had to offer with workshops relating to renewable energy and geographic information systems.

They also toured the Science building, the Learning Resource Center, the Business Department, Administrative offices, the Music Department, the Student Services Center and L-Building to get an idea of what classes and daily college operations are like throughout the day.

Students were served food midway through the tour by the ASRHC and were able to interact with staff members, along with current Rio Hondo students. During their lunch break elementary and middle school students participated in activities for prizes and photos.
