Rihanna brings BMX and the X-Games to NY Fashion Week
Rihanna has been quite a bit busy lately. With the release of her new makeup line ‘Fenty Beauty’ this past week and the launch of her fourth fashion collection in collaboration with Puma two days later.
Rihanna’s been in close connection with Puma since her two-year contract as their creative director was signed a while back. Although they have done amazing unique looks and collabs, it is also rumored that her closing of the show was a hint that this fourth line collab could be the last we see from Fenty X Puma. If the rumors are true, Rihanna definitely left on the highest note possible.
The spring/summer 2018 line debuted at New York Fashion Week, the biggest week in style in the United States. This year designers left critics underwhelmed and slightly disappointed with the fashion that was coming out of New York. That all changed when Rihanna turned the week upside down with her signature mix of sex appeal and tomboy-esque fashion. VOGUE called it “the jolt New York Fashion Week needed.”.
Rihanna proved once again reinvention is one of her strongest suits. From her music to her fashion, you never know what is going to come next and Sunday was no different. The show took place at the Park Avenue Armory, surprising the audience with an unexpected opening show. From pink mountains of sand and motocross bikers leaping through the air, the show left more than one mouth open.
Models such as Adriana Lima and Joan Smalls walked in the show debuting motocross looks from head to toe. Rihanna’s previous collections had very different styles including a goth line taking style cues from Japan, a Marie Antoinette inspired line, and a British prep school line with “88” embellished on most of the clothes calling back Rihanna’s birth year. The jackets, pants, and shoes were drenched in neon colors that are synonymous with the X-Games.
The spring/summer collection featured many ready to wear looks and was worn by models of all colors. Rihanna proved once again that diversity is a huge priority in all of her business ventures. The show included up and coming models Slick Woods and Duckie Thot, who have some of the most unique looks that have ever walked in fashion week.
Rihanna closed the show by riding in on the back of a motorcycle, one hand in the air and the other grasping the driver. She reinvented the iconic walk out that fashion designers do at the end of their respective show. The smile that never left her face. If anything, Rihanna proved that you cannot put her in a box. No matter what, she will surely surprise you with wherever her creativity leads to next.
