The Rio Hondo Volleyball team struck first in the first set against Mt. San Antonio College, but could not string consecutive set wins as they fell to the Mounties 3-1.

After losing their first game to Antelope Valley on Sep 2 by a score of 3-0, the Lady Roadrunners seemed poised to get their first victory at home against Mt. SAC.

In the first set, everything was going Rio Hondo’s way after leading 7-3 before Mt. Sac called their first timeout after Rio Hondo trailed at the start. A dominating start by Rio led to a dominating finish, as they won the first set 25-12 and went up 1-0.

Switching sides must have done wonders for Mt. SAC, as they became the aggressors winning the first 5 points and at one point winning 11 consecutive points in the set. Rio fought back early erasing the 0-5 deficit but could not keep up as Mt. SAC won the second set 25-13 and tied it 1-1.

The third set was completely dominated by Mt. SAC on the attack after taking the lead midway and not looking back while Rio Hondo looked like a completely different version from the team that won the first set. Mt. SAC won the set 25-15 and went up 2-1 putting Rio in a tough position to come back.

Staring at a second straight loss, the Lady Roadrunners came out strong in the fourth set in order to stay alive for a win. Crucial mistakes by Rio allowed Mt. SAC to get back into the game with a 15-4 run and would ultimately take the set 25-17 and a 3-1 victory.

This loss now puts the Lady Roadrunners at 0-2 to start the season and look for their first win, as they play back to back away games on Sep 11 against Santa Ana College starting at 2 p.m. at OEC Quad and against Saddleback College at 4 p.m. at Saddleback Quad.
