Roadrunners lose 2

The Rio Hondo softball team were eliminated from the CCCAA Southern California Regionals after a 4-1 loss to Cypress College on Sunday, May 3.

The Lady Roadrunners’ starting pitcher Ashley Gutierrez gave up four runs in the first inning of the elimination game, but shutout Cypress for the rest of the game and pitched a complete-game giving up four earned runs, 11 hits, and walking one.

Rio Hondo right-fielder Lauren Coronado had two hits in the game and scored the teams only run.

Second baseman Rachel Bustillos drove in Coronado with a double to right field in the fifth inning, but it turned out to be Rio Hondo’s only run of the game and the series.

Shortstop Amanda Toledo had two hits in the game and Gutierrez also had one hit in the game.

In the first game against Cypress, Rio Hondo were held hitless and the game finished, 13-0 after five innings.

It was a tough loss for the Lady Roadrunners, who finished as Co-Champions in the Foothill Conference with a 12-3 record.

In the final game of the conference season, Rio Hondo were down 3-1 in the fifth inning to College of the Desert knowing that only a win would earn them a share of the conference championship.

The Lady Roadrunners promptly scored four runs in the fifth to take a 5-3 lead and claim a share of the championship.

In that game, Gutierrez pitched a complete game and gave up three runs, 10 hits and struck out three.

Coronado had a hit, scored a run and had 3 RBIs.

Gutierrez, Stephanie Pirir-Pulido, and Salina Gonzalez all had hits in the game and each drove in a run

The Lady Roadrunners finished the season with a 22-19-1 overall record.

Coronado finished the season with a 12-8 record, 140.2 innings pitched, 38 strikeouts, 40 walks and a 4.78 ERA.

Gutierrez ended the season with a 7-10 record, 103 innings pitched, 27 strikeouts, 24 walks, and a 4.76 ERA.

Toledo led the Lady Roadrunners with a .389 batting average, had two home runs and 30 RBI.

Pirir-Pulido batted .380, hit three home runs and had 36 RBI.

Coronado hit .368 with one home run and drove in 37 runs.

Catcher Brittany Salcido led the team with four home runs and also batter .315 with 35 RBI.
