Women’s soccer team defeats Cerro Coso, 2-0.

The Rio Hondo women’s soccer team recorded a 2-0 win in their first game of the Foothill Conference season against Cerro Coso on Oct. 10 at Rio Hondo college.

The Lady Roadrunners improved their record to 8-1-1 against a Coyotes team who is now winless in nine games. Freshman Janeth Acuña scored her sixth goal of the season in the opening minute of the match to give Rio Hondo a 1-0 lead.

On a corner kick, Acuña played the ball short to Amber Davidson-Ponce who quickly dribbled the ball into the Cerro Coso area.  The Cerro Coso defense scrambled to try and stop Davidson-Ponce but she found an open Acuña who fired the ball into the back of the net.

In the 9th minute, freshman forward Andrea Sanchez scored Rio Hondo’s second goal of the game after capitalizing on a mistake from the Cerro Coso goalkeeper. Rio Hondo remained comfortably on top as Cerro Coso struggled to gain possession of the ball.

Freshman Sabrina Gonzalez almost extended Rio Hondo’s lead after directing a header from a corner kick towards the goal of the Coyotes. However, the Coyotes left-midfielder made a great defensive header to clear the ball out of the area and relieve her team of the danger posed by Rio Hondo.

The Lady Roadrunners created more chances and could have been more ruthless in front of goal, but still managed to preserve the win against Cerro Coso. Rio Hondo play Chaffey College on Oct. 14 at 2PM in Rancho Cucamonga and host College of the Desert on Oct. 17 at 2PM.
