Mt. Sac beats Roadrunners 3-1 in four sets

A bad start and a overwhelming Mt. Sac defense kept the Lady Roadrunners from getting a win with a 3-1 loss Wednesday night at Rio Hondo College.

In the first set, Mt. Sac was the epitome of athletic perfection; they were focused and able to get a quick 3-0 lead.

A big hit by Nicole Barrios helped kill the surge by the Mounties, to get the score at 3-1.

But that’s as close as the lady Roadrunners were able to get once Mt. Sac got the first set 25-16.

In the second set, the lady Roadrunners showed a resurgence of perseverance and hope by taking the lead 3-1, with blocks by Megan Ward and Nicole Barrios.

Rio kept the pace throughout the set with exceptional plays by Michelle Shimamoto and Barbara Monzon, which helped them climb the mountain of a point deficit. Winning the set 25-21.

But in the end, Mt. Sac’s unshakeable defense tossed the lady Roadrunners off the cliff, taking over the third and fourth sets with exceptional plays throughout.

The Mounties maintained scores of 25-18 and 25-13. Rio looked overpowered and overwhelmed by the furious assault of Mt. Sac, and were ultimately backed into a corner they were unable to fight their way out of.

Makena Schildmeyer led the Roadrunners with 6 kills, the best on the team and fourth best in the foothill conference. Michelle Shimamoto chipped in 6 kills and 10 digs.  Jasmin Marcias led Rio with 29 assists.

Coach Esko was realistic, but also optimistic on the loss, saying, “This was a tough loss for our team, but not a defeat.”

The lady Roadrunners are headed to San Diego on Friday for a tournament, and are building off their loss in preparation for their renewed hunger for victory.
