Dear Vee, why vote?
Alright so it’s no secret that the 2016 election is definitely one this country has never seen before. We have the wife of a former president and a reality TV show host turned politician in the running for President of the United States. Unfortunately, I’ve heard lots of talk about choosing not to vote in the upcoming election, which pushed me to write this column.
Voting is so much more important than we think, it’s a privilege. You might be saying, “Vee how is it a privilege to vote in this election? I don’t even know who to vote for,” well let’s start with this: before 1965 if you weren’t a caucasian male you weren’t even allowed to vote.
Minorities and women were excluded from the voting process, literally rejected from taking part in the future well being of the country we live in. Now that the basic right was granted, why not take advantage of that? You have the chance to have a say in who you believe would be the better presidential candidate for our country.
Even if you might feel neither candidate is fit for the job, there will always be a candidate whose pros outweigh their cons. Wouldn’t you rather choose that person? It’s important to do research on these candidates so you can choose the better candidate for yourself. Every vote counts, you don’t want to see your least favorite candidate win because majority of the people rooting for the other party didn’t vote.
Okay well let me play devil’s advocate here and explore the option of not voting. So let’s say you don’t vote, your non vote will automatically go to Jill Stein who represents the Green Party. If you don’t know who she is, I suggest you do some research on your future candidate because that’s who your vote will go to if you choose not to take part in the voting process.
However, voting is important and essential for the party you believe can make a difference. The greater the numbers, the better their chance of being in office will be. All because you took the time out to make a choice, and place your vote.
Your Friend, Vee
