Man with a Machete Shot Dead in Whittier
A shooting involving the police occurred today around six in the morning Wednesday, November 16. The shooting happened on the corner of Painter and Penn, near the Whittier Police Station and city hall. One man waving a machete was shot dead by law enforcement.
An anonymous bystander reported that a man with a machete was walking the on the street being aggressive, then the police came and opened fire upon the man after he was not cooperating.
The police reported the incident in a press release by Lt. Kent Miller. Miller said that the police received a 911 call about a man waving a machete around. Officers arrived at the scene shortly after trying to talking calm him down. The officers opened fire on the suspect, at which when the suspect hit the ground, then the officers initiated CPR. The suspect was then transferred to the hospital.
Lt. Steve Jauch sheriff of the Homicide Bureau said the officers found the man heading westward. Jauch stated from there the man threatened the officers with a machete.
Jauch reported said that the suspect picked up a stick and threw at the officers, no one was hurt. From that point, the suspect charged the officers with the machete and they opened fire.
The suspect was pronounced dead at PIH Health Hospital at 7:01 am.
