Over the weekend, representation of Latin American culture was plentiful across the East and West Coasts in music and comedy.

Several Latin American artists, bands, DJs, and special guests performed at Coachella Weekend 1 between Friday and Sunday.

That same weekend, on the East Coast, Latin American representation continued on Saturday’s episode of Season 48 of Saturday Night Live (SNL).

But on the first day of the 2023 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, two Latin American artists headlined. Others performed throughout the rest of the day, including ¿Téo?, who was part of the GOBI stage lineup.

Just around 11:30 p.m., Bad Bunny’s headlining set began. He played over two dozen songs, like more recent tracks “Me Porto Bonito” and “Titi Me Pregunto” –– the opening song of his set.

The performance featured guest rappers Ñengo Flow and Jhay Cortez.

During the first day of the annual festival, Bad Bunny and Becky G performed on the Coachella Stage –– the festival’s primary stage.

Becky G’s performance took place in the middle of the day’s lineup. And similar to Bad Bunny’s set, Becky G’s set featured multiple guests, like singer Peso Pluma.

But as that was occurring on the main stage, two Latin American DJs were opening and headlining Friday’s lineup over on the Yuma Stage.

DJ Juliet Mendoza kicked off the day, beginning her performance at 12 p.m. Towards the end of the night, around 10 minutes before Bad Bunny’s set, DJ Maceo Plex’s headlining set kicked off.

Then, the following day, around the same time as the final and closing sets were taking place at Coachella in Indio, California, Karol G’s first-ever SNL appearance from a few hours earlier aired across the West Coast.

Along with Karol G’s first SNL appearance, for the very first time, Ana de Armas hosted SNL. Armas is the fourth Latin American person to host SNL this season and in 2023 alone. She most recently portrayed Marilyn Monroe in Netflix’s “Blonde.”

Earlier this year, in January, Aubrey Plaza hosted the long-running sketch show. Pedro Pascal took over hosting duties one month later in February, followed by Jenna Ortega in March.

After joining Armas and first-time SNL cast member Marcello Hernández in the “Spanish Class” sketch, Karol G performed “MIENTRAS ME CURO DEL CORA.” Later, to close the show, she performed “TUS GAFITAS.” Both tracks are from her recent album “Mañana Será Bonito.”

Last year, Karol G was on the Sunday, April 17 lineup of Coachella’s main stage. She performed during the festival’s first weekend.

Across the rest of the weekend at Coachella, bands like Conexión Divina, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, and the Half-Latin American band The Lindas Lindas performed in addition to other Latin American artists like Eladio Carrión and Gordo.
