Apex Arrives Dropping In on the BR Genre
Apex is here and adding something truly unique to the BR Genre.
Apex Legends, the latest attempt at the highly overcrowded battle royale game type dropped last week. Out of nowhere it saw, came, and attracted a populace that right now doesn’t seem to be able to slow down. Within less than a week Apex had at least 25 million players playing the game in its launch week according to Respawn Entertainment, the developer of the game’s blog post. Apex also had during its peak time had two million concurrent players at once making it a successful launch with Twitch.tv viewership near 495,000 viewers according to Pcgamesn.com.
Leave to the People that Revolutionized Shooting Games Before
This class based squads of three (as of right now) game feels like the best of the modern shooters like Call of Duty, Overwatch, and Titanfall but blends them all together in a seemingly smaller map for a battle royale game that has gone the route of being free to play available on the Xbox One, Ps4 and PC.
Set in the Titanfall universe from the previous two games Respawn Entertainment released, the game has a more wild west aesthetic that uses assets and guns from their run and gun titles from before. The art style works to help the game stand out amongst its Fortnite, PUBG, Blackout competition.
Looting doesn’t feel like a hassle like it can be in other BR games, and this is the first BR game that features a Respawn system in it. Allowing dead teammates to participate beyond the death scene with call-outs by having one of your squad-mates pick up your banner and turning it into specially designated spots on the map. As Respawn Entertainment is the original team behind Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare, a game that revolutionized the shooting game industry, it seems only fitting that they could bring something fresh to the over-packed BR genre.
At the start of every match, you get to choose among a selection of heroes or “legends” (called in-game) each representing a class type that would best round out your squad. From Wraith, a dimensional stealth sneaky class legend to Lifeline medic class legend that can call down support like ammo for her teammates, there seems to be a play-type for every type of player with more characters and maps planned on being added further down the year stated by Vince Zampella, CEO of Respawn Entertainment.
