Softball team wins four consecutive Conference games

The Rio Hondo softball teams overall record improved to 11-17 after four consecutive wins this past week, bringing them to a 6-2 record in Conference.

The Lady Roadrunners faced Victor Valley College on March 21 after a rain out earlier in the month forced the game to be rescheduled. Rio Hondo went on to win the game 9-1, as the game only went up until the fifth inning before it was called.

Rio Hondo starting pitcher Brenae Martinez had a stellar performance against Victor Valley and went on to get a total of seven strikeouts. Martinez gave away a mere three hits to her opposition, who only managed to score one run that afternoon.

Rio Hondo scored two single runs in the first and second inning before scoring four more in the third, giving them a 6-0 lead.

The Lady Roadrunners went on to finish the game in the bottom of the fifth inning after they added another three runs to their total bringing the score now to 9-1, the game was called due to the mercy rule.

Rio Hondo then went on to host San Berardino Valley College on March 23, in a game that the Lady Roadrunners would win 9-0. This game was also called in the fifth inning due to the mercy rule.

Starting pitcher Martinez would go on to have another great performance, only allowing four hits in five innings as she completely shutout her SBVC opponents.

Rio Hondo wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, and got a total of five runs in the first inning. Mylene Valencia went three for three that afternoon and got a pair of doubles and a triple while Brittany Salcido got a double and an RBI.

The Lady Roadrunners added another four runs in the fourth inning making it a 9-0 game, before it was called early. Rio Hondo have now gone two consecutive games scoring a total of 9 runs.

Rio Hondo looked to keep improving their record on March 25 as they went on to travel to Palm Desert to face Desert in a double-header.

The first game started at 12:00 p.m. and Rio Hondo won by a score of 6-0. It wasn’t until the top of the fifth inning that Rio Hondo got on the scoreboard, when Elaine Verdugo got a double and broke the tie.

In the top of the seventh inning Salcido got a double of her own, and had 3 RBI’s that afternoon. Verdugo, Gabrielle Salvador, and Esthefany Martinez each scored a run that inning.

Salcido scored a run of her own to seal the deal, after Valencia got a single up the middle giving Rio Hondo the 6-0 win over Desert.

The Lady Roadrunners then had to face Desert again that same afternoon at 2:00 p.m. this time winning the game 12-1.

Rio Hondo didn’t get on the scoreboard until the fourth inning, but when they did they scored a whopping 7 runs. Valencia tripled to right-center and got Julianna Fierro to score as well as Verdugo to get the game going.

Victoria Diaz then singled to right field bringing home Valencia and putting the game at 4-0. Shortly after Esthefany Martinez got a single of her own while Brenae Martinez and Diaz scored as Briana Rios advanced to third base.

Verdugo then went on to get a single to the left side as she advanced to second base and brought home Martinez and Rios.

Desert would go on to score one run in the bottom of the fifth but would ultimately lose the game 12-1 as Rio went on to score an additional 5 runs in the top of the sixth inning to close the game.

Rio Hondo will next face Chaffey College on March 30 at 3:00 p.m.
