‘Austin Bomber’ suspect dead
After several bombings shook the city of Austin, the suspect that is believed to be responsible for the bombings is dead. The suspect killed himself Wednesday morning by detonating a bomb in his car.
Since March 2, there have been five explosions that have killed two people and injured five others. On March 19, Austin Police confirmed that there was a serial bomber terrorizing the city.
Police had no leads as to what or who was doing this. But they did find similarities in each of the bomb’s that went off. Each bomb had been disguised as a package and left in the front door or near a residents home. Police knew they were dealing with a sophisticated bomber because one bombs was set off with a trip wire.
Sunday March 18, a bomb was left on the side of the road. The explosion was caused by a trip wire and ended up injuring two men. On Tuesday morning, a package exploded inside the FedEx facility in Schertz. This package was heading for Austin. Another package that had been suspected to sent by the same person was turned in to police.
Fortunately for the Police there had been surveillance footage that shows a man walking into FedEx wearing gloves and a cap dropping off the package. Police said this video was recorded on Sunday. They were able to use this video to put everything together. They were able to track the suspect’s car to a hotel in Round Rock which is 20 miles north of Austin.
As police waited for tactical units to arrive, the car left the hotel. They were able to track the car down to Interstate 35 in Round Rock. As SWAT team members approached the vehicle, the bomb detonated. A SWAT officer fired his gun but it’s unknown if hit the suspect. They are unsure exactly who the suspect is or if he acted alone.
As of know the investigation is ongoing. Police are trying to determine what was the reason for the bombings and if there are any packages remaining. They now have DNA to determine exactly who could have done this.
