Google Honors Selena Quintanilla
*ANYTHING FOR SALINAS*
October 17, Google released a doodle honoring latin star Selena Quintanilla.
I must include this is the first time Google has done a “Doodle” based singer.
The significance and purpose behind the doodle are that on October 17, 1987, exactly 30 years ago Selena released her first studio album. This album did not only become her first number one album on Billboard 200, but this album led to 5 more albums.
The opening to google starts with a beautiful animation of Selena’s face and the word Google artistically incorporated along with a rose attached. On the end of the word is a button to play an animation video. The video is a cartoon version of her signing made using clip art vectors ‘Bidi Bidi Bom Bom’ as she grows in life and what made her Selena.
Perla Campos, global marketing lead for Google doodles and project manager for Selena doodle, took charge of this project when introduced to idea two years ago.
Campos upon joining the project was immediately connected and invested.
“I grew up as the daughter of a Mexican immigrant single mom living in a small (primarily white) town outside of Fort Worth, Texas. There were always two women who taught me I could do anything and be anything I set my mind to my mom and Selena. Selena has been a part of my life for as long as I could remember.” Â Campos stated.
For two years Perla Campos, illustrator lead Kevin Laughlin and the team had worked with many people on the project including Selena’s family.
“For months, Suzette [Selena’s sister] and I have been in touch. A few months ago we went down to meet her family to do research and we’ve been in constant communication ever since. I’m so inspired by them. They love her fans so much because the fans are the ones that built her up when she was alive, and then even afterward, they’re the ones keeping her memory alive and her legacy.”
Selena’s sister Suzette would never have thought Google would ever create a doodle. Suzette said Google came to them with the idea pretty much done but they changed it so it could have the little details that made Selena, Selena.
“The little details I gave that Selena had red nail polish on instead of bright pink. That she had hoop earrings. They even put red on the microphone the way she used to have it. It just speaks volumes to all the youth that are out there.” Suzette stated.
The Quintanilla family is happy with the doodle. It tells Selena’s story from when she was a young girl to an adult. Some people fear that the message could be taken the wrong way with the politics that are happening today. One ruled by fear and apprehension when it comes to the unknown status DACA Dreamers. However, Perla Campos said the true message is that an immigrant woman should be celebrated not political. Selena has a powerful story. She inspires many people to chase their dream no matter how big it is. The video is currently the number one trending video on Youtube.
