El Paisano Staff Competes at JACC
Journalism Association of Community Colleges (JACC) hosted at Cerritos College, was held last Saturday, October 29 for student attending community colleges in southern California. The competition had five on-the-spot writing contests and featured workshops with experienced journalists.
The workshops were a great opportunity for journalism students to network with like-minded individuals.
El Paisano walked away with two awards, Diana Jaurez won fourth place in on-the-spot opinion writing, and Zackary Mejia won second place in on-the-spot critical writing.
“I honestly was’t expecting to hear my name be called out. I’ve never written a newspaper article before, but I trusted Professor Carrera when she told me I should compete in something beyond copy editing,” said Diana Juarez, copy editor for El Paisano.
“I was ecstatic about winning an award because it was my first time competing at a writing competition,” stated Zach Mejia, El Paisano’s managing editor, about his second place win.
El Paisano will be attending state championships in Sacramento spring 2017.
