Student Spotlight: Joseph Quintana
Former Rio Hondo student, Joseph Quintana, 21, will be starting a new adventure this Fall at Chapman University.
Prior to attending Rio Hondo College, Quintana attended Mountain View High school. He spent three years at Rio Hondo, earning an Associate’s Degree in Communication Studies. He decided on pursuing a News and Documentary major, because he knew he wanted to do something involving a camera or film. “As a child I always loved the idea of working with movies or being behind a camera. I loved being creative and I knew one day I wanted to make something the whole world would enjoy,” he says.
Chapman was not Quintana’s initial choice for transfer. He states he was hesitant at first because he knew nothing of the school until he visited the campus. The professional quality of their news station won him over.
Quintana thanks Rio Hondo journalism advisor, Wendy Carrera for overall inspiring him. “She always encouraged me to push beyond what I think I am capable of. She has taught the things that scare you most are the things you need to start and accomplish,” he says.
The ultimate goal for Quintana is to become an editor, producer, or director. His main focus is to work in the entertainment world, either in movies or television. The concept of coming up with an idea and seeing it come to life is what excites him about his field. And the thought of having positive feedback over work he has created is what keeps him motivated.
“I will miss all the new programs that have started, like the newspaper and the familiarity of Rio Hondo,” said Quintana. His advice for transfer students is that they should not overlook the importance of an outstanding G.P.A., and forming a bond with professors. “If you need a recommendation letter or help, you’re going to want a professor who you trust and has the best hopes for you,” said Quintana.
