“Hot and Cold”
The 2019 baseball season has been up and down for the Rio Hondo Roadrunners.
They started off hot, winning the first three games of the season. They have since cooled off and are now one game below .500. Losing four straight, they will need to make some definite changes to get back on track before conference play begins.
Some of their struggles seem to stem from their offense, or lack there of. As a team, they’re batting average is .275 along with a .319 slugging percentage. They need to bring their batting average up if they are going to compete for the playoffs down the line. With six batters having over 20 at bats for Rio Hondo, only one has more than ten hits. Timely hits when runners are in scoring position and stringing together hits with good approaches at the plate are desperately needed. As they have been outscored 35-3 in their last four games which have all been losses.
Along with their hitting, the Roadrunners pitching hasn’t been anything special. They have allowed a total of 44 runs on the season. Also, they have given up 57 hits with just 58 strikeouts. The pitching staff as a whole will need to do a lot better to turn their season around. They have a total team ERA of 6.06. This will not cut it, especially once they get into conference and face some good and familiar opponents.
Another stat that Rio needs to fix is their errors. They have 12 errors as a team on the season. Errors can lead to big innings and can be the difference between a loss and a win. So eliminating as many errors as possible will only lead to better things for Rio Hondo.
Their season is far from over and there is still plenty of time to turn things around but it will have to be a collective effort to get better in all facets of the game. They will look to become .500 on the season as they host the LA Valley Monarchs on Wednesday, Feb. 20. The Monarchs come into this one with just three wins as well. On a losing streak of their own, Wednesday’s game is a must win for both squads.
