Softball: Roadrunners Lose First Conference Game
Today, Feb. 7, Rio Hondo Women’s softball team lost their first conference game against Long Beach City College 12-5 at the Rio softball field.
Long Beach started the game well in the first inning, while the Roadrunners had a terrible start. The ladies from Long Beach were motivating their teammates when they were batting. Thanks to their support and confidence they scored two runs.
In the second inning, Long Beach scored four more runs leaving the Roadrunners down by six. In the forth inning, the ladies from Rio Hondo performed outstanding as they tried to respond. Rio Hondo’s Arianna Amezcua singled and minutes later Katherine Arroyo scored. The Roadrunners continued to scored four more runs making their opponents nervous.
In the fifth inning, the Vikings didn’t surrender making the score 11-5. The Vikings made excellent hits advancing to second and third base. The Roadrunners right-fielder and central-fielder struggled to catch the ball during the play. The Rio Hondo women’s communication was insufficient during the play because they had more than two players on second and third base.
When the Roadrunners were batting, they were gatting outplayed by the defense from the Vikings. They passed the ball quickly in middle of the field getting the girls from Rio out. The Ladies made couple of hits and made it to first base through third base, but the Vikings communication on the pitch was superb. The pitcher from Long Beach played well throughout the game making the ladies from Rio Hondo strikeout.
As the game continued, Long Beach’s pitcher Joette Vega injured herself on her right leg when Rio Hondo tried to make a run. The game stopped for couple of minutes because she was on the floor. Long Beach coaches tried to assisted her while she was down. She continued playing the last the two innings, but was replaced by one of her teammates during treatment.
Rio Hondo softball team remain strong throughout the game cheering their teammates. While Long Beach softball team made one more run in the last inning. Long Beach continued to win games home and away while Rio Hondo lost three consecutive games. This match was the biggest defeat for the Lady Roadrunners this campaign, but they must continue winning games.
“It was our first conference game and I have a very young team,” said Bianca Urquidi the Head Coach of Rio Hondo softball team. “It was a good start.”
Up next Rio Hondo will face San Diego City College on Feb 8. While Long Beach City College take on Pasadena College.
