Soccer: Lady Roadrunners Ride Early Lead into Victory
The women’s soccer team scored two early goals on Tuesday to take down Chaffey College 2-0 at home in both team’s South Coast Conference opener. Forward Madison Mader scored what proved to be the game-winning goal after just three minutes, then midfielder Ruby Magallon added to the lead in the 14th minute to extended Rio Hondo’s lead.
As the game went on, the Lady Panthers pushed forward every chance they got in search of momentum but the defensive display by the Lady Roadrunners assured the victory and the shutout. Head coach Jennifer Tanaka was very proud of the effort and heart the team played with.
“The team finished two nice goals early on and that is always a great way to start the game,” said Tanaka, “It sets the tone that we are happy to compete.”
Going into the match, the Lady Panthers were ranked no. 3 in California Community College Athletic Association Power Points which Tanaka was fully aware of the dangers that Chaffey bolster had her team’s defense not been on task at all times.
“We knew we had to compete for every ball if we wanted to be successful,” said Tanaka, “The coaches are very proud of the team and our goal is to keep getting better every game.”
