Rookie Quarterbacks in the NFL are Exploding onto the Football Scene
In the 2016 NFL draft, there were 15 quarterbacks drafted.
Only 5 of the quarterbacks drafted have stepped onto the field and got some grass stains on their cleats.
Most notably, number 2 overall pick Carson Wentz is carving up NFL defenses in his first 5 games. The rookie from North Dakota State University has thrown for 7 touchdowns and only 1 interception. The one interception came on a mistake by the young rookie on a game-winning drive against the Detroit Lions.
On his first professional drive, Wentz picked apart the Cleveland Browns defense. He then threw a 19-yard dime to wide-receiver Jordan Matthews.
With the first pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, the Los Angeles Rams selected Jared Goff out of California. We have yet to see the 21-year-old rookie quarterback take a snap. Ram’s head coach says he is developing right now and sitting behind starter Case Keenum.
Another rookie that has shattered expectations is Cowboy’s rookie quarterback Dak Prescott. The Dallas quarterback selected from Mississippi State has lead the Cowboys to an impressive 5-1 start.
Through 6 games, Prescott has thrown for 1,486 yards and only 7 touchdowns. But what is most impressive for Dak, is that he has thrown one interception. The interception came on hit when the ball popped out of Prescott’s hands and into a Green Bay Packer’s hands.
The Dallas offense has firepower and they are a force for any defense to stop. The Cowboys have arguably the best offensive line in football. Top pick Ezekiel Elliot is zooming past defenders leading the league in rushing with 703 rushing yards.
But the reason why all these hot shot quarterbacks are killing it right now, is because of injury.
If Minnesota Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater didn’t hurt his knee in the Preseason, the Eagles would have not traded Sam Bradford and he would be their signal caller in Philadelphia. Carson Wentz would not have got his chance to prove what he can do in the NFL.
Along with Tony Romo getting injured, Dak Prescott would be wearing a hat and holding a clipboard if Romo hadn’t hurt his back against the Seattle Seahawks.
With the injuries of Robert Griffin III and Josh McCown, Cleveland Browns rookie out of USC Cody Kessler is piloting the Browns offense. Kessler has shown he can play in the league. He has thrown 4 touchdowns and only 1 interception. He ranks 13th in the NFL in completion percentage.
Brown’s head coach has high praise for Cody Kessler selecting him in the third round of the NFL Draft.
Lookout for the young guns to be some of the best Quarterbacks in football with the years to come. When the young bucks out of college got their opportunity to show what they can do, they took it.
