Another outstanding performance from the Rio Hondo women’s soccer team led them to their first conference victory, 4-0 against Pasadena City College Oct 4.

After starting conference play on the road Sept. 30 tying against East Los Angeles College, Rio played at home for the first time since Sept. 9 when they won a 6-0 shutout game against Fullerton College.

The Lady Roadrunners have yet to suffer a loss this season, with an overall record of 4-0-3 prior to the game, Rio has outscored the opposition in their wins with 13 goals while only allowing two, and head coach Jennifer Tanaka spoke of the excellent job her team is doing.

“The team has been working hard to keep the ball out of the net and to commit to attacking with numbers. When they play with this type of hunger and determination, it helps them compete.”

Both teams came out focused, having opportunities to score until Rio’s Erika Lizarraga netted her sixth goal of the season in the 19th minute after a bad clearance from Pasadena City College’s goalie Amy Castillo to give the Roadrunners an early 1-0 lead.

It only took five minutes for Rio to follow up with another goal, as Daisy Gallegos scored easily from the left side in the 24th minute to give Rio a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.

With Rio getting 28 shots on goal throughout the game, Samantha Garcia and Madison Mader added two more goals in the 48th and the 57th minute respectively to make it a 4-0 game.

After the win, Tanaka felt the entire team came ready to play against PCC and “executed some very impressive goal scoring opportunities. Consistency is a major factor for us to succeed this season,”

Defensive players Mader, Jenny Garcia, Ingrid Castillo, Melissa Gonzales and Dayna James have been a key factor in many of the games in stopping the attack of the opposing team.

Lizarraga, Gallegos, Garcia, Emma Contreras and Viviana Viramontes have all contributed offensively to helping the team to find the net and win the games they have this season.

As the team gears up for their next game against Mount San Antonio College, Tanaka has her team prepared by “learning how to compete by giving our best and measuring ourselves by their standard. If the team gives their best and does the work, they are always going to compete and good things usually happen. If they want it, they have to show it.”

Rio Hondo traveled to Mt. SAC Oct. 7 where they looked to pick up another conference win that afternoon while still remaining undefeated so far this season.

The team did just what they set out for and won the game 3-2 against Mt. SAC with goals coming from Gracie Lopez, Emma Contreras, and Viviana Viramontes to give Rio Hondo yet another conference win bringing their overall record now to 6-0-3.

Rio Hondo will next play against Chaffey College Oct. 11 for another conference game as the team is determined to continue their undefeated streak and look for another win.
