Rams less than stellar in first game since returning to Los Angeles
The Rams craze was off the charts when it was announced that they’d return to Los Angeles after being in St Louis for 20 years. On Monday night, they finally played their first regular season game, and lets just say they have to do a little better to get the city behind them.
They failed to score any points in their 28-point loss to the hosting San Francisco 49ers, a team that is projected to be at the bottom of the standings this year. The Rams gained a very low total of 185 yards the whole game, and as a result, punted the ball 10 times.
With Case Keenum, a below average quarterback, controlling the offense, Rams’ star running back, Todd Gurley, may be their only true threat on the offensive side of the ball. The 49ers knew that coming in and you can tell they had a solid game plan. The Niners limited Gurley to 47 rushing yards and an abysmal -5 yards receiving. Keenum finished with 130 yards and two interceptions as he completed only 48.6 percent of his passes.
It was a disappointing showing by the Rams as they represented Los Angeles for the first time since 1994. If the Rams continue to struggle, they will begin to feel pressure to start their number one overall draft pick, Jared Goff. People were shocked when they learned Keenum would start over Goff, a 21-year old out of Cal Berkeley. It’ll be interesting to see how long coach Jeff Fisher will put up with poor performances from Keenum before he turns to his 21-year old rookie quarterback.
The Rams play their first game back home in Los Angeles on Sunday at one o’clock p.m. They will host the Seattle Seahawks in their temporary home, the Los Angeles Coliseum. The Rams are hoping to beat the Seahawks for the third time in a row as they beat them in both matchups last season. They have lost a lot of players on the defensive side of the ball since the last time they played against Seattle, though, so there is no doubt that it will be a lot more difficult this time around.
The Rams hope to revive the hype they got when it was announced they were returning to Los Angeles when they take the field this Sunday. A win in the first game in their new home stadium against the rugged Seahawks will definitely do that. We’ll see if they can complete the task and get the city buzzing about them again.
