Julissa Vargas Signs LOI to York College
Rio Hondo College Women’s Basketball player Julissa Vargas signed her national letter of intent on Friday afternoon to play basketball at York College in York, Nebraska.
Vargas, a five-foot-five guard originally from Azusa, was the starting point guard for the Lady Roadrunners throughout the season. Vargas is a fiery competitor and true floor general on both ends of the court.
She averaged seven points and four assists this past season with a 22 point game against San Bernardino Valley College and a 12 assist game against Barstow. Vargas led her team to a solid 14-14 record and playoff berth this past season.
Vargas boasts an interesting basketball history as she surprisingly didn’t play for her high school basketball team, which is extremely rare for college basketball players. The way she’s worked to earn a collegiate basketball scholarship is very impressive.
York College is an NAIA school and is a member of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference. Vargas said that what stood out to her the most about York College, compared to other schools, was the team chemistry and the program itself.
When asked what she would miss the most about Rio Hondo, she said the whole basketball program and most importantly, Coach Johnson, as he was a huge mentor to her during her tenure here at Rio Hondo.
Vargas will enroll at York College in the fall and is looking forward to the success that awaits and she hopes everything goes well.
Vargas joins the line of talented players to leave Rio Hondo and seek success at a four-year basketball program following their development under Coach Johnson this past season.
