Softball team redeems Fullerton loss by winning Victor Valley 12-2
The Lady Roadrunners overall record fell to 6-16 on March 8 after losing a non-conference game at Fullerton College by a score of 6-4.
Coming off a superb 20-5 home showing against L.A. Harbor four days prior, Rio Hondo looked to pick up consecutive non-conference wins for the first time all season.
Fullerton would get on the board first, when shortstop Brigid Ruiz successfully stole home from third base getting them a run.
However, Rio Hondo would respond almost immediately in the top half of the second inning, as they scored four runs of their own. Brittany Salcido and Elaine Verdugo both reached base, while catcher Mylene Valencia would single to right field and plate home Salcido.
The scoring would continue when Valencia stole second, as the throw from the Fullerton catcher was an errand one, which earned the Lady Roadrunners another run with Verdugo reaching home on the error.
Two more runs would be tacked on in the inning when Esthefany Martinez tripled to center field, just after Fullerton had walked starting pitcher Brenae Martinez, scoring both her and Valencia.
The Lady Roadrunners would then shoot themselves in the foot and have their lead trimmed to just one. Shortly after, Fullerton would answer back in the bottom half with two runs of their own thanks to two errors by the defense and a single by Fullerton second-base Alexis Pintado.
The momentum from that point would swing in favor of Fullerton and in the bottom of the fourth they would regain the lead for good and secure their ninth victory of the season.
With two base-runners on first and second, Fullerton would gamble on the double steal which lead to a bad throw by Valencia and ultimately tying the game at 4 with Fullerton’s Pintado scoring on the error.
Two more runs were added when Ruiz and left-fielder Tiffany Centeno scored on a single by Miranda Hernandez whose only hit of the day would ultimately prove to be the difference in the game.
Rio Hondo would then go on to play Victor Valley College on March 11, in what was supposed to be a doubleheader. The Lady Roadrunners would only go on to play up until the fifth inning of the first game before the game had to be called due to bad weather.
Rio Hondo was given the win by a score of 12-2 and the second game has been postponed to a later date, March 21 at 3:00 p.m.
Next up for the now 7-16 Lady Roadrunners is a non-conference home game against Long Beach City College on Mar. 18 at 3 p.m.
