Rio Hondo Men’s basketball team faced MiraCosta on November 22.
The Roadrunners managed to come out with a win by two points at Mira Costa, 72-70. Starters Leo Maidana and Shawn Benn were the leading scorers with Maidana netting 18 points, four assist, six rebounds, and three steals. Benn had a total of 13 points, and six rebounds. Coming off the bench Anthony San Miguel had 12 points, nine blocked shots, and two rebounds.
Mira Costa’s Kevin Marsh had a total of 17 points and five rebounds.
The Roadrunners will enter the Santa Monica Tournament this Friday and Saturday and play in the L.A. Southwest Tourney Dec. 13-14.
Before the Mira Costa game, Rio Hondo hosted the Cypress College Chargers and came up with a big victory, 84-69.
The Roadrunners were coming off a loss to East Los Angeles College Huskies, 81-72.
Being early in the season the Roadrunners were finding out that their capable of doing a lot of positive things on the court.
The Roadrunners started off great shooting over 50 percent from the floor.
Cypress could not find their rhythm.
The Roadrunners outrebounded and out shot the Chargers in the first half with a 46-19 lead.
As the second half begun Cypress came out strong outrebounding Rio and outshooting them.
After being down 27 points the Chargers fought their way back into the game and cut the deficit to single digits.
But the Roadrunners would not let the Chargers tie the score, as Rio would end the game strong and finish off the Chargers.
Statistically the Roadrunners outrebounded the Chargers 45-26, 19-10 in assists and shot 50 percent from the floor.
The top three leading scorers for Rio was Benn recording a double double by scoring 15 points and 10 rebounds. He added three assists.
Juan Vanegas added to the cause with 15 points, three rebounds and three assists.
Anthony Farmar led all scorers with 21 points, had five rebounds and five assists.
