Rio Hondo College has a variety of different clubs that can meet the interests of every student on campus. One of the newest clubs to hit campus is Students for Life, a club for students who identify as Pro-Life on the subject of abortion and wish to inform others on the matter.
Abortion, as you know, is a very controversial topic and starts several arguments between those who are pro-life and pro-choice. As someone who is pro-life on the matter, I see nothing wrong with this club and think it’s a great idea. It’s a great way to inform others about the topic and educate them on what really happens during the process.
I went to their first meeting and they talked about what they want to achieve with this club. The three main goals the club wants to focus on are educating people on abortion, activism, and promoting resources for pregnant women. There are so many questions people have about being pro-life, especially pregnant women. Students for Life wants to help women find those answers.
There are not many pregnant women on college campuses and in my opinion there are two reasons for that. These women are either no longer on campus because they have a child to care for or they had an abortion and can continue their education without having to worry about raising a child.
Of course that is not always the case. There have been plenty of women that still go to school even if they have a child. Still, some women don’t really know any other option so they go to the nearest abortion clinic. It is crazy to know how many clinics are available to women around college campuses. It makes you wonder whether companies are doing it on purpose to make money off abortions for young women since college students are some of their biggest clienteles.
That is one of the reasons why I think it would be a good idea to have a club like this on campus that is willing to help pregnant women on campus and show them all the other options they have. For example, if they want to keep the baby they can find a school that has a daycare or a pregnancy clinic that offers free items for the baby like diapers and/or clothes. There are a variety of things that can be done to help these women.
Another point that I think people should understand is that people who are pro-life and are trying to inform you on the topic are not forcing you to become pro-life. That is why I think people seem to always assume things about others who are pro-life. There is a belief that we are forcing them to change their minds and will not talk to us when we just want to give out facts and information to help those who might need it.
But they just compare us to “church people” who come knocking on their door and who everyone tries to avoid. I personally respect it if they don’t want to talk about it and I will leave them alone. I do know, however, that there are some people who will not stop pestering you until you listen to what they have to say. So I understand why some people assume that they are trying to change your mind and try to avoid them.
Then there is the question, “What if there was a pro-choice club?” Is that okay? I personally don’t think it is, but there will be people who disagree with me and say it is not fair that Students for Life can be a club but not those who believe in pro-choice.
I would argue with something similar to that being pro-life means trying to save a baby’s life and helping out their mothers while pro-choice kills the baby and can harm and leave the mother emotionally scarred which they might regret later in life. They also could not take back the decision if they end up regretting it. Everyone does believe in something different so some might not regret it and that’s on them and how they see it.
This topic can just go on forever with the pros and cons for each side; especially since there are many different ways to argue this and everyone has the right to have their own opinion. Same as how everyone on campus has the right to try to start his or her own club. So if they want to continue trying to make this club successful let them because they aren’t forcing you to be in it. All they want to do is help.
If you would like to know more about this club or are interested in joining you can email them at [email protected] to find out when their meetings are. They also have a Facebook page you can check out called Students for Life at Rio Hondo.
