Ice Tsunami in the East
A huge wall of Ice has forced residents near Lake Erie to “drive with caution”. The weather service in Buffalo have believed wind speeds could reach up to 75 miles per hour. This has forced the police service to close down the Niagara River Parkway.
The New York Power Authority has announced that high winds raised water levels in parts of Lake Erie. The Ice Tsunami has been covering the Hoover Beach area and many parts of Hamburg, New York. Many residents who live in this area have evacuated due to the large amount of Ice. Dave Schultz who is a Hoover Beach resident said “ We’ve had storms in the past but nothing like this, We’ve never has the ice pushed up against the walls and right up onto our patios. It’s in my patio, the neighbor’s patio, and the patio after that”.
Evacuations in other cities
Residents living in the cities of Niagara Falls, Medina, Rochester, Buffalo, Batavia, Warsaw, Jamestown, Orchard Park, and Springville have evacuated their homes to a safer location. The winds can result in damage to trees, power lines, and property damage to various buildings.
Tucker County, West Virginia has have the highest wind speed around 74 miles per hour. This is very high as the speed is close to one of a strong hurricane. Janice Dean who is a Senior Meteorologist from Fox News said “ Wind advisories and warning are in effect through Monday in the mid-atlantic and Northeast due to the very slow moving system”.
Taking Precautions
In order to avoid any disasters, residents have began to bulldoze trees and street lamps. According to the Special Weather Statement released by the National Weather Service in Buffalo, New York people should avoid roads near Hoover Beach. Also, the statement states “Always assume power lines are live. Falling trees and power lines will create a dangerous environment to be in”.
