Eight year old Saga Vanecek little girl from Minneapolis at a Swedish lake found a sword over 1500 years old.

She was having a normal day at Lake Vidöstern during a typical summer day when she stated the following to local Swedish news site: “I picked it up and was going to drop it back in the water, but it had a handle, and I saw that it was a little bit pointy at the end and all rusty. I held it up in the air and I said ‘Daddy, I found a sword!’ When he saw that it bent and was rusty, he came running up and took it.”

The sword this little girl found was no simple sword.

The NPR reports that the sword is over 15,000 years old and extremely well preserved. That dates the sword to a time before the vikings which gives archaeologists an eyeglass into the past.

“It’s about 85 centimeters long, and there is also preserved wood and metal around it,” explained Mikael Nordström from the museum. We are very keen to see the conservation staff do their work and see more of the details of the sword,” stated from Mikael Nordström from Jönköpings Läns Museum.

The lake just experienced a drought which is the reason Saga was able to reach down near the lake house. A concrete slab at the bottom of the lake caused a danger to any boats. Due to the water being lower than usual, the family threw out a buoy to warn approaching boats.

“I asked Saga to bring the buoy, but she was taking her time like a kid does, playing in the water, I was getting impatient because the World Cup game was about to start!” Stated from the Saga’s father, Andy Vanecek.

At first, he thought his daughter found a stick or rock. The Father mentioned the object looked like a sword or toy.

Nordström stated the following the possible origins of the sword or even how it got there in the first place:

“The conservation process takes quite a long time because it’s a complicated environment with wood and leather, so they have several steps to make sure it’s preserved for the future. Why it has come to be there, we don’t know. When we searched a couple of weeks ago, we found another prehistoric object; a brooch from around the same period as the sword, so that means – we don’t know yet – but perhaps it’s a place of sacrifice. At first we thought it could be graves situated nearby the lake, but we don’t think that any more.”
