Your voice, Your vote
The Associative Students of Rio Hondo College (ASRHC) sponsored a voter registration event Tuesday, October 18, in the mid quad featuring POWER 106, Be the Change, and representatives from the Los Angeles County office of registrar-recorder/county clerk. Aside from helping people register to vote, the event also informed students about the different propositions and candidates to vote for this November 8.
Senator chair of legislative affairs for the club Be the Change, Matthew Ruiz, mentioned that the objective of the event is so that people can make an impact and figure out what it is they stand for. Ruiz also mentions that Nov. 8 the club will provide transportation to the actual polling stations so that they can vote.
While not actually registering people, POWER 106’s Gilbert Viera alongside DJ B-EAZY provided music to attract people and get them pumped to register while they also made announcements about the event.
“We’re out here advertising the LA county register report to get people to vote and stuff like that so we’ll be here all day for that,” commented Viera.
Be the Change club members Ruth Hernandez and Marilyn Fregoso talked animatedly and had similar views as to why it’s important for everyone to vote.
“We think our vote doesn’t count. Maybe it might not count for presidency because California is already voting for Hillary Clinton but there [are] other matters and other issues that affect our lives, our children’s lives, our parents, our community and that’s why it’s important to vote,” stated Hernandez.
“It’s super important for our population here on campus, especially the younger students, to understand how like political engagement is so important. If we are going to complain, this is our chance to, you know, voice our opinions and stuff so it is important for us to turn out,” said Fregoso.
She also mentioned how it’s important to not only vote for ourselves but to give voice to the people who are unable to vote, such as the Dreamer students on campus.
