Rio Hondo begins to wrap up its spring semester by announcing the open registration date, April 28, to sign up for the upcoming summer session.

The first sets of classes begin on June 6 with another two sessions starting on June 20 and July 11.

The difference between a full term and a session varies based on the length of each course. The work and participation must be completed in the same amount of time in a four to eight week span as it would be in a 16-week period.

According to the Director of Admissions And Records Leigh Ann Unger, “It’s just the amount of time it took you to get the same amount of work and knowledge given in a shorter period of time.”

Each department schedules its own courses. Most classes available during the summer session are based on popularity and whether they were easy to fill up in years past. They are also determined based on whether they are easy to compress into a four to eight week session.

The courses offered during the summer session try to focus on subjects that are relevant to complete general education credits such as english and math. The departments also consider what courses have not been offered more recently and what courses haven’t been offered that fulfill requirements for students to graduate.

When asked, students expressed that they felt there are enough courses available during sessions. Brianna Avila, a freshman on campus said, “I think so. There’s a lot of variety. Classes fill up pretty fast, though.”

The duration of the course sessions are not all the same.  A full term during the summer is from June 6 to Aug. 12. The first half is from June 6 to July 8 while the second half is from July 11 to Aug. 12. The summer six-week session runs from June 20 to July 29 and the eight-week session dates are from June 20 to Aug. 12.

Students who drive are required to buy a parking pass during the summer. However, the price for it will be cheaper. Tap cards used for bus transportation will be offered this summer as well.
