All Sports Competitions Cancelled Due to COVID-19

California community college spring sports competition and professional sports have all been postponed due to COVID-19. The coronavirus has had a huge impact world wide. More than 160,000 cases across the world have been confirmed and for that reason, many sporting events have been cancelled right away to protect people.

Community College Sports

Thursday Mar.12, the California Community College Athletic Association voted to quickly postpone every sports competition and practices outside of regularly scheduled classes and all nontraditional sports season, indefinitely.

The softball, baseball, women’s badminton, women’s beach volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s track and field, and men’s volleyball regular seasons are all suspended. Also, the 2020 CCCAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships will not be rescheduled. So far the CCCAA has not decided when the spring Basketball Championships will be held. If the virus worsens, then the 2020 champions will be listed “not determined.”

Basketball

NBA announced on Mar.12 that the 2019/2020 season would be postponed after Utah Jazz player Rudy Gobert became the first NBA player to be tested positive. Another Jazz player named Donovan Mitchell became the second NBA player to have corona virus. However, Mitchell states that he feels better.

Adam Silver, who is the N.B.A. commissioner stated the league suspension could last for one month. Silver said it was possible that the rest of the season would be postponed.

Baseball

Major League Baseball, which was schedules to begin on Mar. 26, was  rescheduled until April. The MLB also suspended all remaining spring training clashes.

Japan also cancelled the start of its baseball season, scheduled from Mar.20 through April.

Soccer

All the European and MLS matches have been postponed until Apr.4 and Apr.11. The English Premier League cancelled the league after Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta tested positive for the virus. Chelsea player Callum Hudson Odoi also tested positive this past week. Because of this, Arsenal Chelsea, Everton, Leicester City, and Bournemouth have all quarantined several players. Meanwhile, all female soccer leagues from around the world have also been postponed for a few weeks.

The German Bundesliga was the last league to quit the tide of cancellations, deciding Friday to stop games until Apr.2.

While the French, Spanish and Italian leagues are in complete lock down. Serie A teams Fiorentina and Juventus have players that have been tested positive for the virus. Soccer league games in Asia have been cancelled for two weeks. Mexico’s Liga MX was one of the most recent ones to postpone their matches. The federation allowed for match 10 to be played behind closed doors. Saturday, the federation announced that the league would be suspended until further notice because of the virus.

A few leagues in Africa, and a few countries in South America continue to play in open doors.
