Up and coming artist, Billie Eilish, is setting record sales after the release of her first album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?
An Up and Coming New Artist
The 17-year-old from Los Angeles began as a dancer but quit after an injury. Eilish began showing interest in music at the age 11 after writing and singing her own songs. She began following in the footsteps of her older brother, Finneas O’Connell, who was also a singer-songwriter. In 2015, she recorded her first single, “Ocean Eyes” after O’Connell wrote it for his own band. The song officially released in 2016 on SoundCloud but Interscope Records later re-released the song. After the release of her single and generating positive reviews, she released an EP with four remixes to “Ocean Eyes” in 2017. Throughout the year she continued releasing singles and eventually released another EP, “Don’t Smile At Me.”
Eilish continued putting out singles all throughout 2018 while continuing to gain more attention from new fans. Her single “Lovely”, featuring singer Khalid, featured in the second season of the 13 Reasons Why soundtrack. By the end of 2018, she had already released two singles, “When the Party’s Over” and “You Should See Me in a Crown”, for her upcoming album. On January 2019, she released her third single, “Bury a Friend” and her fourth, “Wish You Were Gay” in March. On March 29th, the much-anticipated album officially released, as well as her fifth single “Bad Guy”. The single debuted at number seven and was her first single to ever do so on the Billboard Hot 100 list.
Breaking Records
Eilish quickly began gaining more fans as the countdown for the release of the album was getting closer. By March 19th, ten days before the official release, the album set a new record on Apple Music for being the most pre-added album on the website with over 800,000 adds. She has caught the attention of many respected artists like Sam Smith, Timbaland, Thom Yorke, Dave Grohl, and actress Julia Roberts. She has signed on to headline many festivals this year including Coachella, Mad Decent Festival, Lollapalooza Stockholm, and many more.
Eilish currently has the top album in the U.S., which makes her the first artist born after 2000 to hit the number one spot. According to Billboard, the album also “breaks the record for the most simultaneously charted Hot 100 titles among women, with 14.” At only 17 Billie Eilish is showing so much promise and will without a doubt make an impact in the music industry with the years to come.
