Donald Glover seems to be having the best month of his career! Not only is his hit FX show Atlanta getting rave reviews, he will make the leap to the big screen starring in Solo: A Star Wars Story as fan favorite Lando Calrissian. As if his plate wasn’t full enough with writing, directing, producing, and starring in these projects he also has a budding music career. Under the stage name Childish Gambino, he released a new single titled This is America.

Glover really showed his extreme talent by hosting and being the musical guest of SNL this week. Being the host of TV’s biggest night in comedy is hard enough let alone the pressure of debuting two new songs. During SNL, Glover starred in some pretty hilarious skits. One involving the Kanye West twitter fiasco and another where he showcased Lando to the world.

Gambino performed This is America and Saturday, a seemingly perfect song for the live show. After the performance the video for This is America premiered! Shot by Hiro Murai, close collaborator to Glover and Atlanta director, the video holds near the aesthetic of the show. This is America’s visual shows unarmed black men being murdered and mass shooting which are synonymous with this country. Some of the lyrics include,

“This is America/ Police be trippin’ now/ Yeah, this is America/ Guns in my area”

Some surprise guests also made it to SNL for Glover’s show. A$AP Rocky joined him in a Migos themed skit. Get Out’s Daniel Kaluuya and Zoë Kravitz introduced before his two performances.

Glover’s timely messages didn’t stop with his perfomances. His Solo skit focused on the lack of black characters in the Star Wars franchise. Glover joked about having whole planets with lizard men while only having four black people in the series.
