British Vogue includes model wearing Hijab for the first time ever
Halima Aden is the first model to appear on the cover of British Vogue wearing a hijab. This is a huge step for British Vogue since the magazine was created in 1916.
Last year in April, it was announced that Edward Enninful would be taking on the role of editor in chief of the magazine. When Edward took this position he became the first man to ever have this position. The magazine has been under fire due it’s lack of diversity. In January, the magazine was fire for having actresses Nicole Kidman and Margot Robbie on the cover along with the names of other white figures. They were calling them “Hollywood’s New Era”. Once Enninful took charge, he made it clear that he believes very strongly in the important of championing diversity. Enninful wants to make a whole new era of diversity for British Vogue.
“It is a moment for Vogue to do what it has always done best: to offer a bold vision of what the future can -and should- loom like. Even 5 years ago-and certainly 10 or 20 years ago-if you were shooting a cover like this, the girls would not have looked like these young woman do,” Enninful wrote.
Nine models have been chosen to be on the cover of the May issue. Model Halima made history by being the first in British Vogue history to wear a hijab. The cover has woman of different sizes, races, and backgrounds.
For Enninful, diversity is not just black and white. For him it consists of diversity across the board. Race size, socio-economic background, religion, sexuality is what he wants to celebrate on the cover. The woman he chose for the cover represent that to him.
“To me they represent that a new global idea that anything is possible,” wrote Enninful
