Agents Mulder and Scully return to ‘The X-Files’

May contain spoilers!

Fans were delighted to hear that the beloved 90’s paranoia television program, The X-Files, would come back from it’s hiatus, and have a 10th season starting at the beginning of the year.

Ending its last episode of the season on Monday, Feb. 22, many were intrigued and eager for more as the season left off with a cliffhanger.

Originally released in 1993 and ending in 2002, the TV program The X-Files stars David Duchovny as Fox Mulder and Gillian Anderson as Dana Scully. The series was created by Chris Carter and was aired on 20th Century Fox.

The X-Files has had two films come out, both during the filming of its television program and afterwards. The X-Files movie was released in 1998, and The X-Files: I Want To Believe was released in 2008.

In the show, the two FBI special agents (Mulder and Scully) investigate cases containing both the unsolved and controversial. Mulder is obsessed with the unexplained due to the fact that aliens abducted his sister when he was 12.

This paranoia led him to work in the FBI in a unit called The X-Files. Scully was an FBI agent who was sent to spy on Mulder to debunk his research. When Scully starts to question what she believes, she eventually decides to join him, and together the two try to solve cases and pursue the unsolved.

The X-Files theme song, composed by Mark Snow, can be familiar to most even without having ever watched the show. It has been linked mostly with paranormal videos posted on YouTube, and has been described as ominous and chilling to hear.

When the show ended in 2002, it was left off with the FBI closing the unit, putting an end to The X-Files bureau.

The show was scheduled to continue two more seasons with new leads due to the less appearances of Agent Mulder. The reason for this is because Duchovny wanted to try new projects and  announced he was leaving The X-Files. Anderson agreed to stay for season 9, but said she would leave after the season finale. However the show was ultimately cancelled because of the loss of viewers.

When the idea was brought up in 2012 of whether a third film should be made, both actors seemed interested in reprising their roles. It was later announced in 2015 that it would turn into the six-episode season it is now.

The first episode of the new season, My Struggle, starts with Mulder giving a brief summary as to why he was involved with The X-Files.

Starting 14 years after, the new season starts by showing how both agents do not work for the FBI anymore. Agent Scully is presented assisting surgeons and Mulder’s job occupation isn’t clear.

Walter Skinner, an assistant director of the FBI, calls Scully in hopes to also reach Mulder. The episode ends with The X-Files unit being re-opened.

The new season is friendly for all audiences as it is open for new viewers and original series’ fans to watch. Although helpful, it is not required to recap and watch the other seasons’ as this one is pretty self-explanatory.

Although some things are clearly different, such as Mulder questioning his beliefs and the change in the alien conspiracy theory, the show stays relatively close to the original.

Overall, the new season is captivating and is a must-watch. The last episode ends with a cliffhanger, as series creator Carter promised it would leaving fans hooked and wanting more, an 11th season is wanted from most people, but at this point it is unknown whether there will be one or not.

The TV show is available to watch on Apple iTunes, Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon.
