The Trump administration announced their plans to ban TikTok, a popular social network app, from downloading on Sunday, September 20. Users who have the app downloaded on their phone will still be able to use it, but there won’t be any updates. Any other individuals that want to download the app will be restricted from doing so. 

President Donald Trump signed two executive orders to ban the app owned by Chinese company called ByteDance. He stated that the app violated the privacy of users in the US. The popular app had to be sold in order for U.S. users to continue using it. Microsoft offered to buy the app, but ByteDance declined it.

A deal has been approved by President Trump, Oracle and Walmart to buy TikTok. The approved deal postponed the ban that was scheduled for September 20th. When the deal is sealed, Oracle will take 12.5% stake, while Walmart will have 7.5%. TikTok will have a new name “TikTok Global”. ByteDance still has yet to approve the deal. According to Commerce Secretary, Wilbur Ross, the ban on downloading TikTok would be pushed to September 27.

An executive order was issued on August 14 for TikTok to be sold to the U.S. by November 12. If it’s not sold by that date, there will be more restrictions on the app.
