Setting Rock & Roll Free With Ty Segall’s “Freedoms Goblin”

Ty Segall has to be one of the hardest working and tenacious human beings in the Rock & Roll scene today. Pumping out project after project since his eponymous debut album ‘Ty segall’, released in 2008 on Castle Face Records. With various side projects, with bands like FUZZ, The GOGGS, and Epsilons, to add to his repertoire. Segall’s lo-fi garage rock sound has evolved with every record released to date, hitting every spectrum of rock possible with immaculate procession.

Segall’s newest album “Freedom’s Goblin”, just released this past month on Drag City Records.  With one full length album released the year before and various singles, Segall shows no sign of him slowing down anytime soon. At 19 tracks this album varies through a variety of  sounds throughout the entire album. With songs like “Cry Cry Cry” a song of love and lost, Carrying a post Beatle George Harrison-esque guitar melody. Or a song like “meaning” that takes you back to some of his first albums with the punk garage rock sound. And of course Segall takes it beyond the garage door with songs like “She” and “Atla” that have more a stadium rock quality sound.

Segall takes the sounds of Sabbath’s larger than life presence and Marc bolan’s glitter fueled persona and meshes them together for the perfect blend of Rock & Roll.  With heavier melted down riffs and longer solos, this album is definitely a step forward for segall and even rock & roll.

In a age where Rap and Electronic music reign supreme, some would argue that rock & roll has done it’s time. Ty Segall is living proof that statements like these are nothing but fiction. Segall himself is a true believer that rock music and its live energy that is very hard compete with, will never die out. In a 2016 interview with Thrasher SKateboarding Magazine Segall is asked on the current trend of 70’s and 60’s rock and whether or not this will be long standing. He simply responds with  “No, it won’t die. People will always need that kind of energy. Live music will always exist”.

Segall has no upcoming shows in the Los Angeles Area, but is currently touring the US. His closest show being in the Bay Area at the UC Theater in berkeley. After his US tour he’ll be making his way around Europe. Hopefully Segall will be making his way back around to LA soon.
