President Trump vs. The NFL

NFL kneels for equality

Over the weekend President Trump expressed what he thought about some of the NFL players sitting or kneeling for the national anthem. This is a continuation of the protest that started last season.  The protest began with former quarterback of the San Fransisco 49ers Colin Kaepernick taking a knee during the national anthem last season.

“If a player wants the privilege of making millions of dollars in the NFL, or other leagues, he or she should not be allowed to disrespect our Great American Flag (or County) and should stand for National Anthem. If not, YOU’RE FIRED. Find something else to do!” Trump tweeted on September 23.

In a speech Donald Trump made in Alabama, he stated that any fan that is offended by this action should leave the stadium. He wants no support to go those players and teams that choose to protest the NFL. This did not sit well with players and coaches. Many teams took action and those who chose to protest stood together. Teams like the Seattle Seahawks did not participate in the national anthem before their game against the Titans.

“As a team, we have decided we will not participate in the national anthem, We will not stand for the injustice that has plagued people of color in this country . Out of love for our country and in honor of the sacrifices made on our behalf, we unite to oppose those that would deny our most basic freedoms. We remain committed in continuing to work towards equality and justice for all.” Players released this statement after the game.

Other teams like the Tennessee Titans decided to stay in the locker room and walk out with their arms linked together. Every team in the NFL protested the national anthem in a way that meant something to them. Teams owners and coaches joined the teams in their protest, showing respect for their players’ decisions.

Not every player protested the anthem. Tom Brady linked arms with his teammates, but still held his hand over his heart.

According to Donald Trump, the NFL ratings have gone down and are the lowest they have ever been. “NFL attendance and ratings are WAY DOWN. Boring games yes but many stay away because they love our country. League should back U.S.” Donald Trump tweeted.

It seems like the NFL protests are going to continue until equality is found.
