MTV to Reboot TRL

MTV is reviving the hit TV series ‘TRL’. Total Request Live was a staple for the Music Television Channel in the early 2000’s. Each day a top 10 list of the most popular music videos of the week would air.  Hosted by many VJ’s most notably, Carson Daly who is now host of Emmy Winning singing competition, The Voice.

The hit show took place at MTV Studios in Times Square. Always featuring a live studio audience, the show felt lively and exciting. Music’s biggest names would stop by to premiere their new video or promote an upcoming album.

The new ‘TRL’ will have to get with the times. To do so, producers plan on integrating social media including YouTube, Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, and Musical.ly. Something that the original series could not do.

Premiering in early October, the new series has just announced performers for its premiere. Ed Sheeran and Migos, who have both topped the Billboard Hot 100 this year, are set to perform on Monday, October 2nd. Catering to two completely different audiences is a great way to bring in the ratings for the premiere. Migos, a rap group from Atlanta, will bring in the rap audience. Ed Sheeran, a british breakout, will surely bring in the teen girl audience. Shape Of You and Bad & Boujee will most likely be performed, some of the most popular songs of 2017.

TRL is joining a list of many television series of the 2000’s to be rebooted. Nostalgia is clearly a powerhouse for popularity this year. Fuller House has just released it’s 3rd season on Netflix. Will and Grace’s revival has just been renewed for a season 2 before the first season has even aired! MTV has also brought back Fear Factor, the reality competition in which guests play to prove fear is not a factor for them.

With a new social climate and premiering in the digital age, ‘TRL’ is bound to reach a huge audience. Hopefully many musicians will participate and bring back the magic of the original series, which saw acts like Britney Spears, Beyonce, and Rihanna in their beginning stages.
