La Cima magazine won a Gernal Excellence award, the highest honor a publication can receive, at the conference.  La Cima is printed once annually and is a class offered by the journalism department in the spring and summer months.
In addition to La Cima’s honor, artist Robert Flores won a third place in mail-in illustration, Mauricio Chavez took a third place in on-the-spot sports writing and Krystyn Bristol took a fourth place in on-the-spot tabloid layout.
Taking honorable mention awards in on-the-spot competition were Lalig Tarbinian for bring-in photo, Jazmin Lucero for  feature writing and Bristol for sports photo.
There were 30 community colleges and nearly 300 students participating in the two day conference that was highlighted by workshops taught by professional journalists, photographers and broadcasters.
