Rio Hondo Women’s Soccer: Hat-Trick Hero Leads Roadrunners to Victory

Friday, November 8, Rio Hondo women’s Soccer grabbed a comfortable 3-0 win against East Los Angeles College on Friday, November 8. Rio Hondo forward Vivian Viramontes scored a hat-trick for the lady Roadrunners for the first time. The freshman has notched 14 goals in 16 appearances this season.

Exceptional First Half For Rio Hondo

In just five minutes into the game, Viramontes got on the score sheet after a great assist from forward Alice Hernandez. With great possession on the ball, Rio Hondo dominated the Huskies on the right side of the pitch. Rio Hondo recognized that was ELAC’s weak spot and continued to cause problems.

With great pace and skill, Rio Hondo tried to find a clear chances in the attack. Viramontes managed to have a one on one with ELAC goalkeeper, but a great save kept the Huskies in the game. Although East Los Angeles College began to pressure up, the Roadrunners found space from the wings. That led Rio Hondo to double their lead through Viramontes who scored a header from a cross from forward Victoria Galindo.

The Huskies tried to get back in the clash, but Rio Hondo’s attacking threat forced them to defend the whole first half.

Comfortable Second Half For Rio Hondo

Rio Hondo continued to control the match without any problems. Rio Hondo were nearly 3-0 up through forward Serina Vargas, but would miss a clear chance. After a comfortable but uneventful second half, Viramontes finally grabbed her hat-trick in the 80th minute. Hernandez’s cross found Viramontes inside the box once again and scored another header.

This was Rio’s eight consecutive victory, improving their undefeated streak to 12 games. Their last defeat was back in September against Santa Monica. Their defense has been extremely important to their success. The Roadrunners have kept six clean sheets in their last seven conference matches. So far the lady Roadrunners have an impressive record of 14-1-3.

“The girls played hard, we executed our plays well and we scored some nice goals,” said Rio Hondo coach Jennifer Tanaka-Hoshijo. “We are trying to do everything that is going to prepare us to compete at our best.”
