Univision to Honor Women for International Women’s Day

Univision, a broadcasting network catering to Hispanic Americans, will observe International Women’s Day in a special way Friday. The network will have special programming which will honor and celebrate the contributions of women. With the slogan “Juntas Somos Súper Mujeres”, which translates to “Together, we are Superwomen”, Women all over Univision will wear purple to acknowledge International Women’s Day, which also lands Friday.

One of the more glaring events taking place is a history-making broadcast of a Spanish league soccer game. The game will be called exclusively by women. It will feature Mexican soccer league teams Veracruz and Santos Lagunas competing within the Liga MX. The match will begin at 4:30 p.m. on Univision Deportes. It is the first time in history that a Spanish network broadcasted in the US will feature a game called exclusively by women. In addition to that, Univision will have women analysts on set every day on Univision Deportes.

The goal seeks to represent women as a whole. Which highlights the reality that women can join and take part in professional male-driven sports. Sadly, history serves to shine a dim light on that idea. However, as of late, more sports have adopted the notion of adding women into male-dominated sports. For instance, the NBA hired Becky Hammon in 2014 as a full-time assistant coach. Coupled with that, she became the first woman in history to occupy such position in any of the four major sports in the US. Moreover, Ronda Rousey was the first woman to compete in MMA’s highest promotion, the UFC, in 2012.  This came after president Dana White said women would “never” compete in the UFC.

Nevertheless, the fact remains that the times are calling for a change. Women are beginning to become more welcomed in male-dominated sports. And they are doing so effortlessly.

Friday night’s soccer match up continues to open the dialogue for women in any facet of sports. Whether it be on or off the field, Univision is sending a message that women belong. The celebrating of women’s excellence throughout sports journalism will continue to push for a positive reality.

Univision will continue to celebrate women on their platform through different segments and shows thru Sunday, March 10th.
