New Cycle In El Clasico

F.C Barcelona beat Real Madrid 1-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday March 2. It was the fourth meeting between the arch-rivals this season. Barcelona came from eliminating Real Madrid from the Copa Del Rey on Wednesday. Yesterday’s win might have ended Real Madrid’s hopes in La Liga.

Both teams shared the possession of the ball in the first 25 minutes but neither team managed to hurt the other. It wasn’t until the 26th minute when Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic chipped Real Madrid’s goalkeeper to give Barcelona the lead. The first half ended 1-0 with a poor Real Madrid side that looked hopeless waiting to get into the locker room.

The second half saw a Barcelona side comfortable on the field and a Madrid side that just couldn’t find momentum. For the remaining of the game the midfield didn’t exist from either team. The attacks kept going back and forth, but at no moment did it feel like Real Madrid could turn things around. In the end, Rakitic’s goal was enough to give Barcelona the win.

It was the first time in history that a team beat Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu twice in three days. Barcelona now have the edge 96-95 on head-to-head matches vs Real Madrid for the first time in 87 years. With the win, Barcelona remains in first place with the lead stretching to 12 points from  third place Real Madrid. In order to save their season, Los Blancos will have to focus on the Champions League yet again.

Barcelona will receive Rayo Vallecano on Saturday Mar. 9, while Real Madrid will visit Real Valladolid on Mar. 10.
