MLS: Galaxy Youngster Steals the show Against Chicago

Jesus Manriquez, Reporter

It was a perfect day for the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Club legend David Beckham saw his statue unveiled in front of thousands of fans pregame. A tribute to former coach Sigi Schmid following his passing last Christmas was viewed on the big-screen, and an epic comeback on their 2019 Major League Soccer opening game sealed a great start to the season.

When all eyes were on LA superstar striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, it was a 16-year-old super-sub that changed the game.

Highly-touted youngster Efrain Alvarez gave the Galaxy a new dynamic down the right side for the remaining 30 minutes after the hosts went 1-0 down early in the second half. Just eight minutes after stepping into the field, Alvarez gave a beautiful left footed cross into the path of defender Steres who headed it in to draw things up.

The first half ended scoreless thanks to great performances from both goalkeepers. Chicago Fire goalkeeper David Ousted was put to the test early after a header by Galaxy defender Daniel Steres. LA goalkeeper Daniel Binham managed to stop a hot Fire offense led by midfielder Djordje Mihailovic. The most notable moment for LA was when midfielder Romain Alessandrini had to leave the game due to injury less than 20 minutes into the game.

The second half opened up with Chicago Fire taking an expected lead. Fire forward C.J Sapong scored his first goal of the season after taking advantage of a bad back pass from LA defender Diego Polenta. For the next few minutes, the Chicago Fire looked to have control of the game, but a great reaction from the LA Galaxy said otherwise.

Zlatan For The Win

In the 80th minute, Alvarez played sub Chris Pontus who hit the crossbar. But a quick Ibrahimovic got the rebound and with a header, gave LA the winning goal. The LA Galaxy will go on the road and face FC Dallas on March 9 while the Chicago Fire will receive Orlando City on the same day.
