UFC 235: Jones vs Smith Preview

The UFC is back on Pay-Per-View with its strongest card this year. Two-time light heavyweight champion Jon Jones will defend his title against Anthony Smith this Saturday at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The co-main event is a welterweight title fight between Tyron Woodley and Kamaru Usman.

Jones will look to defend his title for the first time since winning the vacant light heavyweight title back in December. The champion has had a bumpy road to regaining his title after being stripped in 2017 for PED usage. Before his suspension, Jones successfully defended his title eight times from 2011 to 2015. He is the youngest fighter to ever win a championship at age 23. Although the general consensus remains that Jones is one of the best fighters to ever step foot inside the octagon, his troubles with substance abuse and constant suspensions remain a powerful asterisk next to his accomplishments.

On the other hand, Smith has been rampant since moving up from fighting in the middleweight division last year. He is on a three-fight win streak, two of the wins being vicious first round knockouts. The odds on this fight tend to lean heavily towards the champion, with most people counting out Smith to pose a threat. However, crazier things have happened in this sport.

Woodley looks to make it five successful title defenses in a row on Saturday night. Woodley’s past three challengers have been infamous specialist fighters. Meaning, they all specialized in one area of mixed martial arts and weren’t strong in any of the other. For instance, Woodley’s last challenger, Darren Till was a known striker. Usman will be the first challenger to pose a threat in all aspects of mixed martial arts, just like Woodley. Usman is an accomplished wrestler and has powerful striking abilities. He matches up well with Woodley and has a similar fighting background to the champion. In addition, Usman is on a 13-fight win streak and has not lost since 2013. The winner of this matchup will be whoever can execute their game plan the fastest.

The rest of the card offers an intriguing matchup between former welterweight champion Robbie Lawler and undefeated wrestling powerhouse Ben Askren. This bout will propel either fighter one step closer to a title shot. If Woodley maintains his belt, the circumstances will be interesting. Lawler lost his title to Woodley and Askren is Woodley’s training partner. Another notable fight sees former bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt taking on Pedro Munhoz. These two 135-pounders are extremely fast paced fighters with slick boxing techniques. Finally, 16-1 featherweight Zabit Magomedsharipov looks to continue his streak of dominance as he meets the always dangerous Jeremy Stephens.

UFC 235 begins with the early prelims on Fight Pass at 3:30 p.m. Pacific, leading to the prelims on ESPN at 5 p.m. and the main card at 7 p.m. on Pay-Per-View.
