Women’s Volleyball: Lady Roadrunners Split Friday Matches 1-1

The Lady Roadrunners lost their first game against the Orange Coast Pirates 3-1 Friday afternoon, but bounced back by defeating the Glendale Vaqueros by the same measure 3-1.

The Roadrunners dropped the first set 18-25 to Orange Coast. Battling uphill, the second set was a grueling 29-27 set that the Lady Roadrunners dug deep to make it an even 1-1 match going into the third. That was to be the highlight for our Roadrunners, however, as they scored only 13 and 15 points in the third and fourth sets respectively, ceding the match to a formidable Orange Coast squad.

Game 1 Loss Impact Game 2 Efforts?

After a tough loss, how would the women respond? A day earlier, Coach Teddi Esko told El Paisano reporter Ignacio Cervantes

“We are basically taking our bad plays and rolling it into the next one.” Esko said, “ We need to learn to mature as a team to not do that.”

The Lady Roadrunners came off the Orange Coast defeat and towards the Glendale Pirates with a vengeance, commanding a 25-14 first set win. The second set, the set that Rio Hondo committed the highest number of errors all match, was a narrow loss by only three points.

The Pirates had it in for the Roadrunners going into the third with one set for both teams. The Roadrunners scraped out a two-point victory in the third 25-23, and would win the final set with only a slightly better margin 25-21.

Lady Roadrunners Bouncing Back

Friday was an important first step because the women picked up their most important win of the season to date, win number one, to put the Lady Roadrunners at a record of 1-2. Wednesday September 5th they play Cuyamaca, and with a win can get to .500. Staying above .500 win percentage beyond Wednesday, and of the rest of the season, will require more of the toughness they showed in Friday’s second game.
