Rio Hondo College women’s soccer team undefeated in last 11 games

The Rio Hondo College women’s soccer team managed to get another two wins this past week, starting with an away victory against El Camino College Oct. 18 followed by a home win against Long Beach City College Oct. 21.

After their two wins, the Lady Roadrunners brought their overall record to 9-0-4 as they remain undefeated in their last 12 games both in regular season and in the South Coast Conference.

Taking the trip to Torrance didn’t seem to intimidate Rio Hondo, as it only took seven minutes from the start of the game for Freshman Samantha Garcia to give the Lady Roadrunners an early lead after Emma Contreras and Gracie Lopez combined passes to set up the opener.

A short minute after conceding, El Camino equalized the game thanks to an assist from Chandel Buena who set up her teammate Kathryn Wilson for the tie.

With the score now tied at 1-1, Rio Hondo picked up their efforts and within minutes Garcia was able to find space and carry the ball up for her second goal of the game, giving Rio Hondo the lead in the 12th minute after an assist from Madison Mader.

Moments after taking the lead, a defensive error from El Camino College caused auto-goal giving Rio Hondo a 3-1 lead going into half-time which gave Rio a little more breathing room against their Warrior opponents.

Unlike the first half, which saw Rio dominate possession of the ball for a majority of the time, El Camino College came out in the second half looking to salvage a tie, if not go for the win.

The Warrior’s efforts proved effective in the 60th minute when Buena, who provided the assist for the first goal, managed to put one in herself, placing ECC within a goal’s reach of Rio.

With the score now at 3-2, Rio Hondo was forced to consolidate their defense in order to ensure they would get the victory that afternoon.

Jenny Garcia helped the Lady Roadrunners secure their victory with two key saves on the day, getting her fourth shutout of the season.

After their win, Rio Hondo improved their conference record to 2-0-2 as they looked to continue their unbeaten streak against Long Beach City College Oct. 21.

The Lady Roadrunners hosted the Vikings at 4 p.m. in a game that once again was a very one sided affair for Rio Hondo.

Erika Lizarraga was the player of the game for Rio Hondo, tallying two goals, one of which was a penalty, and an assist against Long Beach City College that afternoon.

Lizarraga set up Daisy Gallegos for her goal while Garcia got on the scoreboard for the third time this week thanks, to an assist from Viviana Viramontes.

Madison Mader set up Lizarraga’s other goal and Rio Hondo ended up routing Long Beach City College by a score of 4-1.

After another impressive victory, Rio Hondo remains undefeated as they next look to face L.A. Harbor College Oct. 25 at 2 p.m.
